Our families no longer need to provide a device for their student to use at school (formerly known as BYOD) or worry about their student sharing a device with others. Using a District Provided Device (DPD) comes with a host of benefits:
Access to classroom digital tools and content on demand
Appropriate software licensing
Device compliance for District and State assessments
Content-filtering software for students grade K-12 at home and on campus
Malware detection for security

Fees
A District Provided Device (DPD) will be provided to each student grades 3-12. There is a $60.00 annual use fee which will be assigned to each student account by July 14, 2025.

Village Middle and Village High School - all students receive a DPD and are assessed the $60 annual fee.
Summer School
No additional fee is charged for summer school students as long as the fee was paid for the previous school year. If a loaner device is lost or damaged during the summer school session the student will be assessed a fine in Infinite Campus (IC) of up to $515.
Receiving Your Computer / Fees / Checkout
Each student will be loaned a device, device case, screen protector and power supply. All assets remain the property of Academy District 20.
There is an annual $60 fee for this device. The fee supports the sustainability of an equitable 1:1 District Provided Device for all students in grades 3-12. Additionally, repair of a one-time accidental damage is covered.
A device will be checked out to students in grade 3-12 within the first week of attendance. Students grade 5-11 will take their device with them over summer breaks and between other district schools.
The fee payment will be displayed in Infinite Campus immediately regardless of the payment method. Parent/guardians should receive a payment confirmation email at time of payment. The school bookkeeper can log in to Infinite Campus to see payment information.
Students should not place any permanent personalization materials on their device, case or any other district owned equipment. This includes but is not limited to stickers, paint, permanent markers, etc. The equipment needs to be returned in its original aesthetic condition.
Parent/guardians can elect to have the device remain at school. However, this is not a recommended practice since students may need the device if the learning environment changes or for homework, research, etc.
A DPD is not permitted to leave the country. There are certain rules/laws with US and Foreign custom services that prohibit this.
All content on grades K-12 DPD’s will be filtered by grade level, even when on a non-district network. The district makes reasonable efforts to block and filter material and information that is harmful to minors in accordance with the Children’s Internet Protect Act (CIPA).
Damage to the Device
If the annual fee is paid and the damage is a one-time accident, the district will repair the device at no additional cost. If the damage was negligent or more than one time, a fine for the repairs will be assessed to the student in Infinite Campus. The student should notify the teacher or District Technology Technician (DTT) if their device is damaged and/or needs repair as soon as possible. Do not wait to get the device repaired.
If the annual fee is not paid prior to damage, a fine for the actual cost of the damage will be charged.
The district has added cases to all 3120 and 3140 and screen protectors to all 3140 student devices. If a student removes the case or screen protector the $60 usage fee will not cover the cost of the damage.
All equipment checked out to the student is the student's sole responsibility. The parent/guardian will be responsible for the full cost of the repair or replacement cost of the device or components. Hardware prices fluctuate frequently. The most current costs for broken or lost components will not exceed:
Broken Screen Replacement: $274.00

Only certified district technicians may perform work on a device. If a parent or student attempts to fix the device and it is damaged, the full cost of the device $515 will be charged to the students’ IC account.
Students will receive a replacement device while their device is being repaired. The replacement device may be a different model.
Lost/Stolen/Not Returned
The $60.00 fee covers a one-time repair for accidental damage and does not apply to lost or stolen devices or components. In the event of a lost or stolen device or component, a fine up to $515 will be assessed for the full replacement cost. Parents are required to file a police report with the Colorado Springs Police Department and submit a copy to their school district's Technology Technician (DTT). While this may aid in the recovery of the device if it is sold to pawn shops, it does not eliminate the fine imposed on the parent or guardian.
Even if the $60.00 fee has been paid, any items not returned (device, device case, or power supply), a fine for the items will be charged to the student account in Infinite Campus.
Reduced Fees
Families utilizing the Free and Reduced program must complete the required application including the Release of Information form which allows the Free and Reduced status to be shared for reducing the DPD fee. Free and Reduced students will be assessed a fee, however, the fee will be marked as satisfied. Visit our Free and Reduced page for additional detail.
If the damage was a one-time accident, the district will repair the device at no additional cost. If the damage was negligent or more than one time, a fine for the repairs will be assessed to the student in Infinite Campus. The student should notify the teacher or DTT if their device is damaged and/or needs repair as soon as possible. Do not wait to get the device repaired.
Families that do not qualify for the Free and Reduced program but cannot pay the fee should contact the school Principal to request a reduction of the fee.
Statewide Assistive Technology, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (SWAAAC) Evaluations
Students who qualify for a device through a SWAAAC evaluation, as documented in their Individual Education Plan (IEP), are only responsible for one District Provided Device fee. A SWAAAC device issued to a student does not incur an annual fee. If the student qualifies, the parent/guardian will receive a separate SWAAAC Equipment Release Form explaining replacement cost of a SWAAAC device if broken or damaged.
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
If a student chooses to bring a personal device, access to the district network may be limited. Access to state and district assessments is prohibited from personal devices and is subject to Policy JICJ (Student Use of Electronic Communication Device).
If your student plans to use a personal device, please complete the online BYOD Request Form by Sept. 22, 2025 and the fee will be waived upon approval. The form needs to be completed for each school year.
Students will not be able to print at school with a personal device.
Leaving Academy District 20
Upon termination of the student's enrollment, the student or parent/guardian must return the device, case, and power supply in the same condition as received or be liable for the full value of the device, case, and power supply or for any required repairs. Parents must request a refund by submitting a Help Desk ticket to help@asd20.org. The refund amount depends on the condition of the returned items and the date the student left the district.
Taking Devices Home Over the Summer
The guidelines for taking home DPDs over the summer vary by grade level and program:
All Middle and High School students will take their devices home for the summer.
7th-grade students will take their current DPD home for the summer and will return it in the fall. The school will inform the student when they turn in their old DPD and receive a new device, which they will use for five years if they remain in D20.
All 5th-grade students returning to D20 in the fall must take their devices home for the summer to have them for their transition to middle school.
Some 3rd and 4th-grade students attending summer school may need to keep their devices for summer instructional purposes.
3rd graders enrolled in School in the Woods (SITW) for Fall 2025 must take their devices home for the summer and bring them to SITW in the fall.
4th graders at School in the Woods must take their DPDs home for the summer.
Most student DPDs in grades 3-4 will remain at school to ensure consistent access and proper care of the devices.
Parents may request from the school to take home the 3-4 grade student’s DPD for the summer if the annual fee is satisfied.
K-2nd Grade iPads
iPads for students in grades K-2 remain at the school unless special arrangements are made with the school.
Leaving Academy District 20 Over the Summer
If you know your student will not be returning to a D20 school in the fall of 2025, please let the school know and the device will be checked in and remain at the school.
If you leave the district, the device must be returned to the Information Technology Help Desk at 1110 Chapel Hills Drive, Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM-4:30 PM, to avoid a $515 fine.
Device Damage Over the Summer
If the device breaks over the summer, contact the Help Desk at help@asd20.org and they will make arrangements to get it repaired.
Usage Over the Summer
Students may use their DPD over the summer, and the Internet will continue to be filtered by the district.
Students should turn on their device and log in occasionally over the summer to run any district updates. They should do this at least one week before the start of the school year in the fall.
It is not necessary to keep the device plugged in all summer. However, it is recommended to charge the device periodically to maintain the battery health. Ensure that your student's device is fully charged prior to the student’s first day of school.
